In this series, we are not defending the Bible on the matter of sex, but we are fighting for God’s glory in the area of our sexuality. In a world that is fighting to tempt, allure, entice and pervert us, here is a biblical framework to better understand our sexuality and the Gospel:
1) FORMED
God is our designer and creator who formed us in our mothers’ wombs. How we see God is how we will view ourselves and see our sexuality.
When we understand that we were fashioned at the hands of an powerful and loving creator, we see that:
a) We are not a mistake
Psalms 139:13, Jeremiah 1:5 and Ephesians 1:4 all testify that God knew us even before He formed and ordained us.
b) We are not animals
Our feelings do not define us; who created us does! (Psalms 139:14)
c) We are not random
Our lives may seem mundane, unimportant and not counting for much, but we are not a victims of random fate. Our lives were ordained by a Sovereign creator! (Psalm.139:16)
d) We are not your own
1 Corinthians 6:20 tells us that we were bought with a price, therefore we are to glorify God with our bodies. We are our designer’s clay and our duty is to submit to the Potter’s design of who He created us to be.
2) DEFORMED
When sin enters our lives, Satan wins the battle to try and destroy and kill us. The pattern of the enemy is like a 4-step shuffle – deceives, distorts, disobeys, deforms – twisting God’s plan for our lives with shame entering our story. We may think that all sin is equal, but 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 tells us that sexual sin is different, for it is a sin against our own body and perverts our intimacy with God, our Creator. The only cure is to get back to our original design.
3) CONFORMED
Romans 12:1 warns us not to conform to the patterns of this world. There is a war going on in our hearts fighting for our freedom and it is time to choose which kingdom we are going to belong to. We can no longer remain neutral, or in limbo, for that space belongs to the enemy, who is discipling us towards perversion and sexual sin. We need to come back to the truth of our original design and submit to the constraints God has placed upon our lives to protect us. We need to heed the whisper of the Spirit of God who warns us with conviction when we are playing with fire. The enemy’s plan is to desensitize us until it becomes normal. But it is time to stop settling for cheap substitutes and start cancelling out the world’s billboards that scream to us night and day.
4) TRANSFORMED
The Good news found in the extension of Romans 12:1 is that God invites us “to be transformed”.
“To be” is in the present continuous tense, and “transformed” is in the past, so this implies that it is a daily, ongoing process of continually reminding ourselves of the truth about who God formed us to be and submitting to it. It is time to stop the train to destruction and be set free and made whole again.
Romans 1:16 speaks of THE power of God which can heal your hurts, cure your addictions, cancel your confusion and restore you back to your original design of wholeness. We need to stop surrendering our future to our sexuality and making foolish choices that alter God’s design for our lives. This is a choice we must make, not only for our own lives but for our future generations. What are we abdicating today, that our children will have to fight for later?
The Cross of Jesus declares God’s goodness and calls us back to His story. It is only with
radical obedience that we get to have a radical and transformed future.
