“Then as I looked, I saw a door before me, standing open in heaven…” (Revelation.4:1)
1.As I looked, I saw
The door didn’t suddenly appear when the apostle John looked, it had always been there. But perhaps the difference was that John now didn’t just look, he saw! Sometimes because of familiarity we will drive past the same thing everyday but won’t notice or actually see it. What changes is when we don’t just look but rather give our full attention to it. Often we do the same with God. We know He is there, but are we giving Him our full attention?
2.A door
When John looked he saw a door! Door’s in scripture always represent an invitation. In this moment, John was being beckoned by God to enter into a new reality, a new encounter, a new experience with Him. Where we can all too quickly see the negatives, let your eyes be trained to see the opportunities that God is opening and inviting you into each day.
3.Before me
Too often we are a people consumed with looking at what is behind us. Missed opportunities, failed businesses and relationships, the things we’ve done or haven’t done. The invitation that God was calling John into was not behind him but in front of him! Our futures are determined by the direction that we are looking!
4.Standing open
Our access to the things that God has for us are not determined by how much we can do. The bible tells us that “it is not by might, nor by power but by your Spirit O God”. All that God has for you is not based on your efforts and they are not disqualified by what you’ve done. Our access to the greatest treasures in heaven have been made available to us because of Jesus Christ and His perfect and finished work on the cross. God is not holding out on you! We can come with boldness and confidence to the Father because Jesus opened the door wide for us!
We are a people who believe that ATTENTION CREATES ACCESS! Whatever you give your attention to, you allow to have access in your life. If all the above is true, then the only thing standing between us just looking, and seeing and entering into what God has, is turning our attention fully to Him.
