Words of the Wise: Michelle Van Tonder
As we are in our “A Word to the Wise” series, we thought we would take some time and ask some of the amazing people in our community to share their thoughts on the book of Proverbs and what it means to live with wisdom.
Q: You’re basically a part of the furniture of Life Changers, but for those who may not know you, why don’t you tell us about yourself?
My name is Michelle van Tonder and I have been married for three months to the best representation of God’s kindness: Johan Van Tonder. I am a teacher, worship leader and I strive to live life to the fullest.
Q: I know that making the most of every opportunity has always been a characteristic of yours. One thing that stands out above everything else is that you have given yourself to community and to the church so is there a Proverb that you try and live out in your daily life?
The tongue has the power of death and life; and those who love it will eat its fruit.
Q: How has this Proverb helped you navigate everyday life while being a Christ-follower?
This Proverb speaks to the power of words. In one word we can either speak life or death to someone. Once words have been said they start to penetrate the heart. I love being around people and notice the impact of my words. I would rather use my words to uplift people than tear them down. Words are like fruit; we can feed/eat bitter or sweet fruit. I choose to feed and eat the sweet fruit.
Q: Why do you feel so strongly that the words we use are so important?
As a child, I was often called strange and I was bullied for my skin and I was called everything from a lizard to a flaky snowman. These words pushed me down and caused bitterness in my heart.
At that moment I chose to eat the bitter fruit people were feeding me rather than to stand on God’s truth about me. This caused me to use my words to tear people down. I spent three years out of school apologizing for the words I used. I can be quick with my tongue and this Proverb reminds me that my words can carry life or death.
My words can push people towards Jesus or pull them away. Our words carry way greater value than one could imagine. Because of this, I will always choose to speak words of life.
Q: This Proverb obviously means a lot to you and has helped you live out your Christianity, so why would you encourage others to read Proverbs?
Wisdom will come from knowing God intimately and this often comes from meditating on His Word. The amazing thing about reading Proverbs is that no matter how long you read it for or how in-depth you study these words, you are guaranteed to leave with something.
