Words of the Wise: Shelley Anderson
As we are in our “A Word to the Wise” series, we thought we would take some time and ask some of the amazing people in our community to share their thoughts on the book of Proverbs and what it means to live with wisdom.
Q: Shelley, you have been on staff for a little while as well as a major part of our Milnerton congregation, but for those who may not know you, why don’t you share a little bit about yourself?
My name is Shelley Anderson and I am married to Brett & we have two beautiful girls: Brittany who is 22 & Sarah who is 17. I work for the church part-time overseeing Milnerton operations & I help Brett with his business. I love good food, so I am often found in the kitchen baking or trying out new recipes.
Q: I know that the past year and a half has been uncertain and challenging for Brett’s industry, so what proverb has stayed with you throughout this time?
21 Many are the plans in the mind of a man,
but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.
Q: How has this proverb impacted how you navigate life?
This proverb is so important to me because it reminds me that God has a plan for my life & the life of my family. We can make plans through good times and bad times, but what a relief it is to know that His purpose for us will prevail.
Q: One standout characteristic of you and your family is that you trust in God and listen when he speaks. How do you let God’s word dictate how you live?
As you mentioned, since Covid started, Brett & I have had a lot of uncertainty in our lives. The effects of Covid have meant that our business has all but disappeared. Every time we get a little bit of momentum, the levels change and any business we did have is gone. When this happens it’s our human default to start making plans to make money. Some of these ideas work and some don’t.
However, we need to remember that no matter what the idea is and how practical and sensible it is to us, it is our job to ask God and to wait and see what He says, because His purpose for our lives will prevail in the end.
Q: For those who maybe haven’t read the book of Proverbs, why would you encourage them to dig into these scriptures?
I think that even though Proverbs was written long ago, there are so many incredibly practical handles that we can take from the scriptures and use in our day-to-day lives.
