As we are in our “A Word to the Wise” series, we thought we would take some time and ask some of the amazing people in our community to share their thoughts on the book of Proverbs and what it means to live with wisdom.
1) What is your name and give us a short description of yourself?
My name is Gen Barthus. I am a daughter, wife, mom, sister, friend, pre-school principal and Kingdom warrior.
2) What is the proverb to which you constantly hold on?
6 Train up a child in the way he should go;
even when he is old he will not depart from it.
3) Why is this proverb so important to you?
A huge part of my calling in Christ is to influence children; whether this is as a mom, a pre-school principal – in my ministries of Soup Kitchen and Reading Room – or just as an aunt or friend. This proverb helps me to see the kiddies I have the privilege of influencing as little Kingdom influencers and helps me to teach them about who God created and called them to be.
4) How does this proverb practically apply to your daily life?
It helps me to remain consistent, particularly as a parent in the areas of discipline, while striving to model the fruits of the Spirit.
5) For those who maybe haven’t read the book of Proverbs, why would you encourage them to dive into these scriptures?
The book of Proverbs is a wellspring of knowledge. It is so practical and speaks to so many areas of life where guidance is sorely needed. In a world where media often influences and sometimes dictates how life should be lived, it is imperative to have a ‘handbook’ on how to deal with situations in a Godly manner instead of a worldly way.
